The author presents, in a historical context, how music and arts are expanding beyond the bounds of concert halls or museums, from his 20-year experience designing major arts and culture facilities and installations.

Alban Bassuet is an internationally recognized venue and installation designer, planner and acoustician, in the arts and culture built environment. Alban was the director of the recenlty opened 10,000-acres Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana, awarded as the 2017 North American Museum of the Year, seen today as the new destination for the arts and music in America, where he led the new facility’s planning, design and programming. Alban also worked for 15 years at the design and engineering firm Arup in New York, and created the venue concepts of some of the most innovative venues in the world such as the new Greek National Opera House, Le Rosey Concert Hall in Switzerland or the Taipei Asian Pop Music Venue in Taiwan. Pushing the boundaries of representation of the arts, his collaborations include artists such as James Turrell, Ai Wei Wei, Philip Glass, Mark di Suvero, Patrick Dougherty, or Stephen Vitiello, for installations in rural or urban environments such as the Turbine Hall of the London Tate Modern Museum or the NY-Park Avenue Armory. His new company PresenceLab, commercializes ephemeral venue structures for short-term interventions in urban/industrial or natural contexts.
