SCHOOLS AND THEIR WALLS: WHAT THE WORLD LOOKS LIKE THROUGH SCHOOL-COLORED GLASSES

JANUARY 13, 2016

It's become trite to call learning a lifelong endeavor, but to say that learning and living are one-and-the-same remains radical. We'll be discussing the tensions between designing forward from learning-as-living versus learning-as-schooling, asking how learning changes when you place it within a school and questioning what schools might look like if they re-imagine their roles in our communities.

Alec and Shaunalynn co-founded sprout & co, a science education nonprofit in Somerville. With the mission of making science a cultural activity, they've run educational programs in and out of schools, with young people, adults, and both, bringing together topics like algorithms and board games; geometry and art; and music theory, instrument design, and acoustics. Over the past couple years they've spent most their time working to design a new high school in Somerville, MA.
